Leon Schagrin and his parents and siblings before the Holocaust.
Only Leon survived.
About Leon Schagrin
and
the Leon Schagrin Legacy Scholarship
Leon Schagrin was only a baby when the Tzadik Rebbe in the small Galician town of Tyczyn told his worried parents that their fragile child was destined to outlive them all.
Decades later, that prophecy would carry a weight no one could have imagined.
Leon survived the Holocaust and the destruction of the Jewish communities of Galicia.
But survival was only the beginning. He chose to spend his life telling the world what happened—so that the families, neighbors, and vibrant Jewish towns that once filled Galicia would never disappear from memory.
For decades, Leon has spoken to students, communities, and leaders, carrying the voices of those who could not.
As Leon approaches his 100th birthday, The Art of Humanity is honored to announce the Leon Schagrin Scholarship for Holocaust Teacher Training—ensuring that educators across the United States can continue sharing the history of Leon, the Schagrin family, and the Jews of Galicia with future generations.
